Market Day was first held on Saturday, September 16, 1978, reviving an old tradition in Newtown, where long ago, local farmers brought their crops to town to sell and enjoy a day of festivities and contests that culminated with a horse race down State Street. Market Day has been traditionally held on the second Saturday after Labor Day each year, as well as in early October on ocassion, and was organized to allow you to step back in time and stroll along charming Court Street seeing colonial craftsmen demonstrating their crafts and selling their wares, while listening to the town crier announce festivities that included a corn husking match, pumpkin contest and complimentary hayrides. A colonial militia encampment was actively on display and could be watched as they drilled. Other amusements included authentic balladeers, free continuous Williamsburg movies and food appropriate for the day.

All proceeds from these “Market Day” festivities are used to support the Newtown Historic Association. For information, call the Association at (215) 968-4004.
