SUMMARY:“The Life and Times of Captain Daniel Bray: From Waterman to Militia (1741 to 1840)” presented by Daniel McAuliffe
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Bray was first a Scottish farmer from Baptisttown\, New Jersey\, who became an experienced waterman on the Delaware River\, rising to Captain of his own Durham boat in 1769 at age 19. Later he joined the 2nd Regiment Hunterdon County New Jersey Militia\, rising to captain in 1775. He earned his position in history when General George Washington charged him with obtaining the boats needed to cross the Delaware River on Christmas Night in 1776. Later he was promoted to general of the militia and fought in the War of 1812. \nEnjoy a first-person interpretation about Daniel Bray—from his boyhood as a farmer\, to building Durham boats to becoming a waterman on the river\, to marrying Mary Woolverton\, to obtaining the boats for George Washington—then back to farming and finally the War of 1812. There is some audience participation\, two costume changes\, and a short play. The talk is supported by slides\, a sung original River Shanty\, and a Recited Ballad by Joseph Folsom (1903) with a short break. \nThe narrator\, Daniel Nurmi McAuliffe\, has been a reenactor for 32 years with the 5th Pennsylvania Regiment\, crossing the Delaware River numerous times. In 2013\, he was asked to portray Captain Daniel Bray to replace his deceased mentor\, Dick Bray\, a direct descendant. \nThis event is free for members. Non-members are also welcome to attend\, and donations are always appreciated. \nBy attending NHA\, or NHA-related\, events and activities\, you allow the Newtown Historic Association (NHA) to record or photograph you during your attendance and to use these images for promotional and archival purposes on any medium for an unlimited period.

SUMMARY:Lighthouse Hill Cemetery Heritage Walk Sign Ribbon-Cutting
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to add the Lighthouse Hill Cemetery to the Newtown Heritage Walk.  The cemetery is a deeply historic site that serves as the final resting place for numerous African American residents and veterans. The name “Lighthouse Hill” originates from an 1840 fire that destroyed the nearby John Wesley African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church; the fire was so intense it could be seen for miles\, leading locals to nickname the site “Lighthouse Hill.” While official archives once listed fewer than 100 names\, recent research has documented at least 186 individuals buried there. Most of these graves remain unmarked\, as many residents at the time could not afford grave markers. \nWe invite you to attend and learn more about the Lighthouse Hill Cemetery from NHA historian and research lead\, Brian Rounsavill. \nThis event is free and open to the public. All are invited and you do not have to be a member to attend. \nBy attending NHA\, or NHA-related\, events and activities\, you allow the Newtown Historic Association (NHA) to record or photograph you during your attendance and to use these images for promotional and archival purposes on any medium for an unlimited period.

SUMMARY:NHA Happy Hour (6:00 PM - 7:00 PM; 105 Court St.) and Frederick Douglass Returns to the Newtown Theatre
DESCRIPTION:On February 4\, 1864\, Frederick Douglass visited Newtown and spoke at Newtown Hall\, now known as Newtown Theatre. On February 4\, 2025 – exactly 162 years later – the theatre will welcome nationally acclaimed Frederick Douglass impersonator Darius Wallace to the theatre to deliver “Frederick Douglass: The Self-Made Man & The Work of Rebuilding a Nation.” \nThis is a completely different show than 2025. In this one-man theatrical event\, Wallace steps into the voice\, passion\, and moral authority of Frederick Dougalss to deliver his power Self-Made Man speech—an enduring message about resilience\, education\, and self-determination. But this is more than a recitation. The evening expands to include what Douglass spoke about in Newtown in 1864\, which was his urgent advocacy for the Freedmen’s Bureau – an institution that provided education\, housing\, and legal aid to millions of newly freed men and women – and his vision for a nation united by justice and equality. \nThis performance speaks powerfully to today’s conversations about equity\, citizenship\, and the responsibility we share in shaping a more just society. It is a stirring reminder that the work of freedom is never finished and that we all have a role in building the future. \nPrior to the event\, a limited number of tickets are available for a 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM cocktail hour at the historic Half Moon Inn (Court Inn)\, 105 Court Street. Wallace will attend the cocktail party as Frederick Douglass. \nCombined tickets for the cocktail hour/performance include VIP seating at the Newtown Theatre. All proceeds from the cocktail hour benefit the Newtown Historic Association. \nFor more information and to purchase tickets\, visit: www.thenewtowntheatre.com/events/2026/frederick-douglass-returns-newtown-theatre
