SUMMARY:Annual Spring Clean Up
DESCRIPTION:Our Annual Spring Clean Up is Saturday\, April 18th. We start at 8:30 a.m. and\, if you are not a morning person\, it’s okay to wander in a little late! \nWe are asking for volunteers to help clean and polish the many antiques and furnishings at the Inn. No experience is necessary—just a desire to help out for an hour or two to put the Inn back into good shape. As the saying goes\, “Many hands make light the work!” \nIf you aren’t able to make it on this date and still want to help\, consider dropping off some paper towels\, trash bags\, and/or cleaning supplies to be used for cleanup. Items can be dropped off on Thursdays from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Callahan Research Center\, 100 Mercer Street\, Newtown\, or leave a message for the NHA at (215) 968-4004 if you need to make other arrangements. \nWe appreciate all of the time and effort generously given by many volunteers over the years to maintain our treasured Half-Moon Inn. We hope to see you on April 18th to continue this tradition! \nBy attending NHA\, or NHA-related\, events and activities\, you allow the Newtown Historic Association (NHA) to record or photograph you during your attendance and to use these images for promotional and archival purposes on any medium for an unlimited period.

SUMMARY:NHA Happy Hour (6:00 PM - 7:00 PM; 105 Court St.) and Frederick Douglass Returns to the Newtown Theatre
DESCRIPTION:On February 4\, 1864\, Frederick Douglass visited Newtown and spoke at Newtown Hall\, now known as Newtown Theatre. On February 4\, 2025 – exactly 162 years later – the theatre will welcome nationally acclaimed Frederick Douglass impersonator Darius Wallace to the theatre to deliver “Frederick Douglass: The Self-Made Man & The Work of Rebuilding a Nation.” \nThis is a completely different show than 2025. In this one-man theatrical event\, Wallace steps into the voice\, passion\, and moral authority of Frederick Dougalss to deliver his power Self-Made Man speech—an enduring message about resilience\, education\, and self-determination. But this is more than a recitation. The evening expands to include what Douglass spoke about in Newtown in 1864\, which was his urgent advocacy for the Freedmen’s Bureau – an institution that provided education\, housing\, and legal aid to millions of newly freed men and women – and his vision for a nation united by justice and equality. \nThis performance speaks powerfully to today’s conversations about equity\, citizenship\, and the responsibility we share in shaping a more just society. It is a stirring reminder that the work of freedom is never finished and that we all have a role in building the future. \nPrior to the event\, a limited number of tickets are available for a 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM cocktail hour at the historic Half Moon Inn (Court Inn)\, 105 Court Street. Wallace will attend the cocktail party as Frederick Douglass. \nCombined tickets for the cocktail hour/performance include VIP seating at the Newtown Theatre. All proceeds from the cocktail hour benefit the Newtown Historic Association. \nFor more information and to purchase tickets\, visit: www.thenewtowntheatre.com/events/2026/frederick-douglass-returns-newtown-theatre

The full series will be available to stream beginning Sunday\, November 16 at PBS.org and on the PBS App. \nThe series offers a powerful retelling of how the United States was founded and the sacrifices made in its war for independence. \nThe NHA is deeply honored that the Half-Moon Inn Tavern will be a part of this historic production\, and we invite everyone to tune in and explore more about our nation’s past. SUMMARY:General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:In researching their new book\, “Slavery\, Friends\, and Freedom in Bucks County\,” authors Pat Mervine and Joe Coleman have uncovered dozens of untold stories about Bucks County people and places involved with the Underground Railroad. They have been able to link Bucks County to daring escapes\, challenges to the Fugitive Slave Act\, and even an infamous Supreme Court decision\, all of which made national headlines. The stories Pat will share will take you back to the time when slavery and bounty-hunting were legal\, and when people of both races found the courage\, compassion\, and conviction needed to make Bucks County a safe haven and Pennsylvania a free state. Their book\, “Slavery\, Friends\, and Freedom in Bucks County\,” will be available for purchase at this event; the full purchase price of $30 goes to the African American Museum of Bucks County’s Capital Campaign. \nPatricia L. Mervine enjoyed a 30-year career as a speech/language pathologist and assistive technology consultant in Bucks County schools. For her second act\, Pat has become immersed in researching local history. Her first book on local history\, “Boone Farm: Its People and Place in Middletown History\,” tells the stories of the twenty-one owners of the Boone Farm\, a 1716 stone farmhouse on the banks of Core Creek. That property is soon to be the permanent home of the African American Museum of Bucks County. Both “Boone Farm” and “Slavery\, Friends\, and Freedom in Bucks County” are Pat’s gifts to the African American Museum of Bucks County\, a project she believes in with whole heart and soul. \nThis event is free for members. Non-members are also welcome to attend\, and donations are always appreciated.

SUMMARY:Painting Conservation Techniques and Materials
DESCRIPTION:Paul Gratz’s presentation on art conservation will explain how the combination of modern techniques with Old World craftsmanship offers the finest in treatment for oil paintings\, murals\, and gilt objects. Truly skilled art conservation preserves as much as possible of the original art itself\, and therefore preserves its utmost value. Conservation treatment restores original radiance\, color\, and detail to treasured oil paintings and art objects\, adding years of life and maximum value to even the most damaged artwork. \nMr. Gratz is the owner of Gratz Gallery & Conservation Studio\, Inc. Under his leadership\, the gallery has represented American artists with numerous exhibitions and publications for over four decades. Most recently\, Mr. Gratz started representation of an extensive collection of works by American Modernist\, female painter\, Peter Miller. The collection of over 220 works went through his careful art conservation and is accompanied by a monograph on the artist published by Mr. Gratz in cooperation with art historian Francis M. Naumann. \nGratz Gallery has been a trusted representative for private collectors and museums in the expansion and upgrade of their fine American art collections. Over the years\, Gratz Gallery has successfully sold to and represented a long list of renowned art organizations and private collectors\, and assisted in exhibitions with fellow galleries and Fine Art Museums. \nMr. Gratz has been a private conservator for 40 years\, working with Princeton University Art Museum for 30 years\, providing conservation services for private collectors\, prestigious national museums\, and art organizations.
